Formula used

Consumption (g) = ((Body Length × Chest) + (Body Length × Sleeve Length)) × 2 × GSM ÷ 10000

Body length, chest, and sleeve length should already include your factory's standard sewing allowances (commonly around 12cm added to body/sleeve length, and 6cm added to chest width) — enter the final allowance-inclusive numbers, not the raw garment spec measurements.

What you need before you start

  • Body length, with sewing allowance already added, in centimeters
  • Chest width, with sewing allowance already added, in centimeters
  • Sleeve length, with sewing allowance already added, in centimeters
  • Fabric GSM (grams per square meter)
  • Fabric price per kg, if you want cost as well as weight

Frequently asked questions

How is fabric consumption calculated for a knit garment?

Consumption in grams equals (Body Length × Chest, plus Body Length × Sleeve Length), multiplied by 2, multiplied by GSM, divided by 10000. All three measurements should already include sewing allowance before being entered.

Do I need to add sewing allowance separately?

No — enter the final allowance-inclusive measurements directly. Common allowances run around 12cm on body length and sleeve length, and 6cm on chest width, but this varies by factory and garment style, so check your own spec sheet.

How accurate is this formula?

It's a widely published industry reference for knit T-shirts and polos, but it hasn't been verified against a specific factory's real order numbers. Confirm it matches your own team's method before quoting a buyer off it.
